The Joel Community Project

The Joel Community Project

Backing the C in KCAH!

Did you know that over 400 people are made homeless in our borough every year and that up to 50 guests stay in the temporary winter night shelter in the coldest winter months as there is nowhere else for them to go? Would you like to be part of building a healing community for homeless and vulnerable people near the centre of Kingston providing practical, emotional and spiritual support? Read on!

The Joel Community Trust (formerly St Peter’s Church Hall Trust) in partnership with KCAH have developed an exciting project where any homeless and vulnerable people in the borough can find shelter, food and friendship.

Our plans

To build a community based on the monastic values of hospitality and compassion on the site at St Peter’s, offering a whole range of services for homeless and vulnerable people. This will include: housing and benefits advice, tracking down places in established hostels or in longer term accommodation and providing shelter for those who don’t have the means to stay in a hostel. We will also offer friendship, food and spiritual nurture and opportunities for learning new skills, both from within and without the Church community in the Borough.

Our inspiration (Extracts from Isaiah 58)

6 "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen...

to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?

7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter?

The Joel Community Trust seeks to:

Play an active part in the life of the local community by relieving suffering and distress among homeless and vulnerable people irrespective of colour, creed or class.

Protect the self-esteem and dignity of homeless and vulnerable people and restore confidence, whilst providing security and stability.

Provide opportunities for creativity and industry, inspiring homeless and vulnerable people to learn new skills and seek constructive employment.

Promote social justice and partner with other organisations and support local initiatives that will bring about community action on behalf of homeless and vulnerable people.
